I was intrigued by a book entitled, Naming the Unnameable, by Matthew Fox (Homebound Publications, Pawcatuck, CT 2018). Fox has gathered eighty-nine names for God and written a brief description and devotion for each name. This is not necessarily an original idea. There are several books occupying Christian bookshelves that have done this in one form or another. What sets Fox’s little book apart from the others is that he includes names for God from other faiths and also from science. The result is an informative, insightful, challenging, mind/faith expanding devotional and meditative tool.
In addition to the names and descriptions of God, Fox provides the reader with ways that invite meditation on the names and questions by which to reflect on them. I found myself seeing God from several different perspectives. All of these vantage points have given me a greater understanding of the unfathomable mystery we call God. They also have enabled me to see God’s presence in creation where God had previously been ignored or unnoticed.
This book took only a few hours to read, but I find myself returning to it over and over again. It invites a continuing dialogue. I encourage you to pick this book up and read it. It will nudge you out of your comfort zone, challenge a complacent faith and open up an entirely new experience of God’s presence in your life.
I received this book free from the author and/or publisher through the Speakeasy blogging book review network. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
