Authentic Health

It’s New Year’s resolution time. I just finished reading of Authentic Health: The Definitive Guide to Losing Weight, Feeling Better, Mastering Stress, Sleeping Well Every Night, and Enjoying a Sense of Purpose, by Gus Vickery, M.D., (Morgan James Publishing, New York, 2018). If any one of these is one of your goals for the New Year, then this might be a book for you.

Though not a thick tome, this book does contain a wealth of knowledge and is packed full of resources. Vickery writes in an easily understood, informative style. I think he achieves a good balance conveying information, while not getting bogged down in the details. He seeks to inspire positive change and he does so with well researched facts, recommendations for change and doable steps to initiate the change.

One of the things about the book that is attractive to me is that it is wholistic. Vickery doesn’t just preach diet and exercise. There are chapters on sleep (I’m incorporating some of his action ideas into my nightly rituals), stress management with relaxation techniques and even a chapter on discovering one’s purpose in life.

I didn’t really appreciate all of the swipes at the food and pharmaceutical industries. Yeah, they’re bad and they are out for themselves and not the consumers, but a couple of illustrations would have been enough. Vickery includes enough information in his book that he could almost take the offenders to court (and handily win his case).

All in all, Authentic Health is a good book. Sure, the hard work is up to each individual to follow the advice of the book and institute change in his or her life. Yet, if healthful change is desired, this book provides a lot of information and doable actions to begin those changes and achieve the desired goals.

I received this book free from the author and/or publisher through the Speakeasy blogging book review network. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
