Escape or Engage?

I recently had the opportunity to preview the movie, “The Road to Edmund.” I want to heartily recommend it to you, but it depends. Why do you go and watch a movie? If you go to movies to be scared out of your wits by animated dolls, guys in hockey masks, chainsaws and vomited pea soup, then this movie isn’t for you. Is edge of your seat endless action, stunt doubles and special effects your thing? If it is, this movie isn’t for you. Now, if you don’t go to movies to escape the world, but rather to be engaged in life, then you’ll probably really like “The Road to Edmund.”

This movie is a ballad; a story of two men, who for a short time, journey through life together. Through the wonders of cinematography, we are able to join them on their travels. They are men of faith and as men of faith they seek to engage the situations they encounter with the love and grace of God, which they have experienced. It is not an easy task. The answers to their questions are not quickly or obviously evident. There are times when they are as stumbling and bumbling as Jesus’ original disciples. At other times whey are wise as the wisest of sages. As the two men engage faith and life, the viewers are invited to join them.

The movie doesn’t have a lot of answers, but it does ask a lot of questions. At its end, I was both refreshed and thoughtful. I was refreshed and renewed because I had heard the good news of God’s love and grace in the person of Jesus the Christ. I was thoughtful because I needed to wrestle with many of the movie’s questions and discover their implications for my life. I’m discovering that I’m still on “The Road to Edmund.”
