Grief 2 Growth: Planted, Not Buried

Grief 2 Growth is a story. Each of us has a story. It is important for us to share our stories. Living in community, we strengthen, encourage, and educate each other, when we share our stories. Our stories bond us together as we face the heartaches, challenges and triumphs of life.

Grief 2 Growth: A Story Shared

Brian D. Smith has a story to share and he does so in his book Grief to Growth: How to Survive and Thrive after Life’s Greatest Challenges. A few years ago Brian’s fifteen year-old daughter, Shayna, died without warning in her sleep. Brian and his family have trod the pathway of grief—they continue still to walk this path. His book is his reflection on the journey he has traveled. Since we all experience grief over the loss of a loved one at some time in our lives, Brian’s words are instructive and meaningful.

Brian has read a great number of books on grief and put a lot of time and effort in studying the subject. The fact that his book is well researched is not its main attraction to me, though. What I really like is that the book is personal. Brian allows the reader into his life and into his struggle to come to grips with his great loss. He occasionally makes mistakes in the way he handles his grief. These mistakes are not hidden and the reader is able to learn from them. Some of his attempts to address his grief are more beneficial than others, which the reader sees.

Grief 2 Growth: A Message of Hope

The reader always feels a sense of hope in this book. Grief, when it is faced honestly and intentionally, brings growth. Brian doesn’t pander any “feel better quick” schemes. He doesn’t repeat the common, empty platitudes. He simply shares his story, and in the darkness and fog of grief there is light.
