Monday, June 18, 2018–That Your Joy May Be Full
“We declare to you … what we have heard” (1 John 1:1a).
When we were children, we played a game called, “Telephone.” We’d sit in a circle. One person would start the telephone message by whispering it into the child’s ear, who was sitting next to him or her. The message would continue around the circle repeated mouth to ear. Finally, the message would return to the original sender and we were always amazed at how different the message had become. The same things frequently happen in social media today. From post to post, the message is altered until the content of the message is completely lost.
The writer of this letter wants to reassure his readers that his words are not another example of the game of “Telephone.” He heard these words directly from the mouth of Jesus. What the disciple has written truly are the teachings of Jesus. This is not a claim to inerrancy or infallibility, but rather a declaration of their veracity and authority.
When we read these words, we hear Jesus speaking to us. Jesus’ words might challenge us at times, while at other times they may give us comfort, encouragement or hope. Whatever Jesus’ message is to us, his words have the power to transform our lives and our world.
Open our ears, Lord, so that we may hear what you have to say to us and empower us to act on your words. Amen.
Tuesday, June 19, 2018–That Your Joy May Be Full
“What we have seen with our eyes” (1 John 1:1b).
After the accident, the police officer interviewed witnesses. She asked each witness what he or she had seen. As they responded, she typed their words into the computer. Each witness had seen the accident from a different perspective. They had noticed different things. When combined, the witnesses’ reports created a clear picture of what had happened.
When people saw Jesus, they noticed different things. Some people were attracted to Jesus’ physical appearance, while others took note of the way Jesus acted toward people, especially the women and the outcasts. The many descriptions of Jesus, developed a clear, wholistic picture of Jesus.
The writer and other members of the Christian community, who had seen Jesus, shared their stories with those who had come later and had not met Jesus. Those stories helped them and us know Jesus, and gave all of us a clear picture of how we were to act as followers of Jesus.
Lord, open our eyes that we may see you and enable us to live by your example. Amen.
Wednesday, June 20, 2018–That Your Joy May Be Full
“And touched with our hands” (1 John 1:1c).
The disciple Thomas couldn’t believe his eyes one week after Jesus’ resurrection. He needed to touched Jesus’ hands and side. As Peter sank lower into the waves, he needed more than Jesus’ soft admonishment. Peter needed to feel the clasp of Jesus’ hand on his, as Jesus lifted him out of the water. The leper needed more than to hear Jesus’ reply to his statement, “If you want, you can make me clean.” He needed to feel Jesus’ loving touch.
Touch is an important part of our lives. We can actually become emotionally sick if we don’t touch or are not touched. Touch serves to confirm that we didn’t imagine what we heard, or see an illusion. The writer touched the resurrected Jesus. He knew that Jesus lived. Jesus had touched him, also. The writer had experienced Jesus’ caring touch and loving embrace. Yes, Jesus was alive.
The writer asserts that he touched Jesus. With his assertion comes the invitation for us to touch and to experience a living God. We reach out and touch the water and we feel its life giving power. Cupping our hands, we hold them out and receive the bread. We take the bread and dip it in the wine and we receive God’s gifts of the forgiveness of sins, life and salvation. The invitation is to touch and see that the Lord is good.
Let us take your hand, Lord, as you guide us. Surround us with your loving embrace, Lord, when we are fearful and unsure. Amen.
Thursday, June 21, 2018–That Your Joy May Be Full
“This life was revealed” (1 John 1:2).
We build relationships with others a little bit at a time. Though we never know each other completely, we grow closer as we reveal more about ourselves to each other. The information that we share is a gift. We may withhold many details or just a few. What we do share, no matter how great or how small, is always a gift.
The Lord longs to live in a relationship with us. To do this, God has given us Jesus in order to give us a clear revelation of who God is. Seeing, hearing and touching Jesus, we see God’s steadfast love, overwhelming grace and unconditional forgiveness. God’s revelation to us is a gift of love.
We reveal ourselves to each other with the hope that we will be accepted and not rejected. In like manner, we receive God’s revelation with God’s hope to be received and not spurned and God’s intention that we might journey through life together. As we walk together, the revelation continues.
Thank you for your gift, Lord, of revealing to us who you really are. Amen.
Friday, June 22, 2018–That Your Joy May Be Full
“We declare to you what we have seen and heard” (1 John 1:3a).
Each of us has a story. Our stories are made up of our experiences—what we have heard, seen and touched. All of our stories are different with some being more interesting than others. Our stories are uniquely ours. Whatever our stories, they all contain an intrinsic power. They not only have the power to reveal who we are, but they also have the power to touch and affect the lives of others. Our stories are almost always more powerful than our thoughts, ideas, and even our strongly held beliefs.
John’s letter is not a neat theological treatise. The writer’s central purpose is not to debate ideas or offer a list of instructions. Instead, the writer wants to tell his story, which is also God’s story, and give his readers the opportunity to experience its power.
As followers of Jesus, who bear witness to God’s love and grace, the power is not in the logic of our arguments or the persuasiveness of our speech. The power is in our stories of what God has done in our lives—what we have seen, heard and touched. Our stories are not told because of pride, but are motivated out of a sincere desire that others might open their eyes and experience God in their own stories.
Thank you, Lord, for being a part of our stories. May our stories of what we have seen, heard and touched inspire others to experience you in the stories of their lives. Amen.
Saturday, June 23, 2018–That Your Joy May Be Full
“So you also may have fellowship with us” (1 John 1:3b).
Twenty youth from First Church attended a National Youth Gathering. For one week their stories merged as they shared, meals, music, messages and missions together. When they returned home, the bonds that they had formed remained strong and continued to be strong for many years. A handful of volunteers offered to serve meals every Wednesday at a local homeless shelter. Their shared experiences created strong ties with each other. The time they spent with the homeless also started relationships with them. The circles of fellowship expanded, and as the old hymn suggests, the circles were unbroken.
Our shared stories of God’ love and grace bind us together in unbreakable circles of fellowship. We have shared post worship coffee together along with church picnics, conventions and mission trips. We have also been showered by the waters of baptism and we have feasted together at the Lord’s Table. Not only are we a diverse gathering of individuals we are also brothers and sisters in Christ.
We give you thanks, Lord, that we are all part of your family. Amen.
Sunday, June 24, 2018–That Your Joy May Be Full
“So that our joy may be complete” (1 John 1:4).
It had been a tough, long week for Juanita. She had travelled to four states and conducted five presentations. The results were positive, but Juanita was dead tired—and she missed her family. When her plane landed at her home airport, Juanita rushed to her car, loaded her luggage into the truck and set off on a straight path for her home. Her family was waiting for her when she arrived. Juanita was greeted with screams of, “Mom’s home,” with smiles and hugs. The family gathered around the kitchen table to enjoy a meal together again, and to share what had happened during the week. As Juanita sat and listened to their stories, her heart glowed and she realized that her joy was complete.
The early Christians came together for a meal they called the “Agape Feast.” It was a combination, pot-luck, Bible study and worship service with Holy Communion. They were a diverse group of people who came from several different social and economic classes and a variety of vocations. Still, when they came together fellowshipping, worshiping, and communing, their joy was complete.
Though we are very different from each other, we are still people of one Lord, one faith and one baptism. We are united by the cross of Christ and by the Holy Spirit’s work in us and through us. When we come together as God’s children and as the Body of Christ, our joy is complete. We have a taste of heaven on earth.
Lord, thank you for the gift of joy—complete joy. Amen.
