Two in a Bed and Two Grinding

The Galilee Episode by Ronald W. Goetz

The Galilee Episode, Ronald W. Goetz (El Cajon, CA, Blossom Valley Trumpet, 2019).

If you like to plum to the depths of a passage of Scripture and mine it of all its treasures, then this book is for you. Ronald Goetz, in his book, The Galilee Episode, uses all the exegetical tools and historical reference works to bring Luke 17:34-35 to life. In this passage, Jesus makes reference to two men in one bed and women grinding together.

Some Biblical interpreters have understood this passage to be apocalyptic in nature. They claim the fact that one man and one woman are left behind, while others are taken, supports the idea of the Christian rapture. Goetz, unsurprisingly, quickly disproves this idea and goes on to suggest that the verses refer to an actual historical event. The incident is the persecution of gays and lesbians in an area of Galilee.

Throughout the years, there have been several attempts to interpret biblical passages in such a way that same sex relationships are seen in a positive and affirming light. David and King Saul’s son, Jonathan, were said to have had such a relationship, perhaps Paul and Timothy, and maybe even Jesus and the beloved disciple. In my opinion, these claims were based on shaking circumstantial evidence and unconvincing exegetical proofs.

Goetz has done his homework, in this book. His evidence is solid. When he lists his conclusions based on his research, the reader must give serious consideration to his position. Because of this, I believe this book will be helpful as the Christian community continues to deal with a history of anti-gay teachings and persecutions and attempts to move toward reconciliation and acceptance.

I heartily recommend this book to serious students of the Bible. It is not an easy read. The Galilee Episode, is a scholarly word. It is, however, worth the effort and helpful in our efforts to expand our understanding of God and same sex relationships.

  1. Kevin, thank you for the warm review. Please excuse me for taking so long to discover it
Only after I published The Galilee Episode did I finally realize what I had discovered.
Luke 17:34-35 is a judge’s verdict. The two same-sex couples were charged with sexual as l transgression. A famous first-century Pharisee, R. Yohanan b. Zakkai, defined the key word in verse 35. According to Tractate Sotah, Folio 10a, the word “grind means nothing else than sexual transgression.”
The two women in verse 35 are well known to you, Mary and Martha. If you have ever wondered why one women was seized and the other was acquitted, wonder no longer. One was Jewish and the other was not. Josephus himself said that the governor’s jurisdiction “was a mixture of Jewish and Syrian.” (Wars 3.57
    So thanks again.
