Have you ever wondered what a conversation between two different faith traditions would look like? You no longer need to wonder. You can read the conversation and even view it. Pick up a copy of The Lotus and the Rose: A Conversation between Tibetan Buddhism and Mystical Christianity, Reverend Matthew Fox and Lama Tsomo (Namchak Foundation, Missoula, MT, 2018).
The book is a verbatim of conversations between two teachers—one an Episcopalian priest and the other a Tibetan Buddhist lama. Their conversations, which cover a score of topics, take place in classrooms. Students are present. They ask questions and seek clarification. The reader becomes a participant in the classroom discussion.
I really appreciated the tenor of the book. It is gracious and accepting. It is surprising how many similarities there are between the two faith traditions. If we keep open minds, there are many things that we can learn from each other. There are also stark differences between the two. When these were uncovered, the areas were acknowledged and received with courteous questioning and affirmation.
I do not see this as a beginner’s book. Though an advance degree isn’t necessary, a basic understanding of Christian history, theology and a cursory exposure to some of the Christian mystics is helpful. My knowledge of Buddhist teachings was almost non-existent and I found myself googling terms in order to keep up with the conversation.
The bottom line is that I recommend this book to you. I found it informative, insightful and inspiring. I received new ideas that I have begun to incorporate into my own daily practice of prayer and meditation and my walk of faith. I think that this will be your experience, also.
I received this book free from the author and/or publisher through the Speakeasy blogging book review network. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
