“The Power of Habit”
My reaction after having read Charles Duhigg, The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business, (Random House Trade Paperbacks, New York, 2012.) was, “Wow, what a book!” Have you ever had a teacher like Robin Williams’ John Keating in “Dead Poets Society”? You know, one of the teachers that could make the most boring of subjects (in Keating’s case, English Literature) interesting and even exciting. If you have, then you know what it is like to read Duhigg’s book. If you haven’t, then you’re in for a treat.
Most of us have not reflected on the effect habits have on our lives. We know that good habits are hard to create and bad habits seem almost impossible to break. Beyond that habits are simply habits. Duhigg takes us into the world of habits. He writes powerfully about habits’ impact on our lives. Duhigg explains the pattern of habits and describes what is needed to make or to break habits. He illustrates his points with stories taken from all walks of life, which touch the hearts and minds of the readers. The result is a book that is not only entertaining and informative, but also helpful, applicable, and perhaps even life changing.
Even though you may not be a reader of non-fiction books, this is one of those books that you shouldn’t miss. It is a book that I can’t recommend highly enough. Wow!
