A Scientific Approach to Time Management
Book Review: Unbusy: How to Leverage the Physics of Flow to Accomplish more of what Truly Matters and Feel Less Busy at the Same Time, Andy Dragt, 2019
There are a plethora of self-help and time management books on the market. Unbusy, by Andy Dragt, can certainly be listed among them. There is a difference, however. This book’s methods of self-improvement are based on the laws of physics.
In the first third of the book, Dragt explains the Constructal Law. This is a law developed by Adrian Bejan, which explains how things flow. Bejan wondered why the shape of trees is such a popular shape in nature. He discovered that it was paradigm for the most efficient flow pattern. This flow pattern can be seen in river systems, metropolitan traffic patterns, and cooling of super computers and chips. Dragt takes the model and applies it to the flow of time in our individual lives.
The law is helpful and Dragt gives many examples of how people can apply it to their lives. Dragt also provides thought questions in order to help people implement what they have learned from the Constructal Law into their lives. The result is living life with a level of intentionality and lowering one’s sense of being busy and being controlled by time.
I found the scientific part of the book intriguing. Dragt’s suggestions are helpful and, if one incorporates them into his or her life, they can make a difference. In all, I would recommend the book to anyone who wants to lessen the feeling of being controlled by too many things in his or her life.
