Who Stole My Bible, Rev. Jennifer Butler (2020).
Jennifer Butler has written a delightful book entitled, Who Stole My Bible. The book does two things. First it underscores the differences in understanding the nature of the Bible and in biblical interpretation. A branch of Christianity has decided that the Bible is inerrant and interprets the Bible in a legalistic and judgmental manner. Meanwhile a majority of the Christian faith understand the Bible to be inspired and authoritative. Pastors and other students of the Bible, with this perspective, tend to interpret the Bible in a more loving and graceful manner. Butler skillfully portrays these different interpretive methods and the stark contrasts of their findings.
Butler also challenges the reader with her interpretation of nine passages of Scripture. She demonstrates how these verses proclaim God’s love for humankind and all of creation. By putting the ancient message of these words into a modern context, Butler also issues a call to action to her readers. Christians are challenged to be living examples of God’s love and present day fountains of the waters of life.
Butler recovers the Bible from today’s thieves. Her writing style is breezy and easy to understand. She uses modern day illustrations to bring the words of the Bible to life. By the end of the book, the reader has a better understanding of the message of the Bible and is excited about the life followers of Jesus are called to live. I highly recommend this book.
